What is journalism? I think the better question is, “what is NOT journalism?”. Everything we do, every single human being, has to do with journalism. Whether it be on a formal level, such as a mass-media production, or whether it be on a personal level, such as the staple question, “How are you?”. In both instances, we as humans are constantly on the search for knowledge and updates, “breaking stories” or “break-ups”. I remember hearing a quote once, “Knowledge is contagious, infect truth.” How true of a statement! Personally, when I hear some new information, I sometimes can’t think about anything else until I have told someone about it! Again, this could be something as public and world-wide as US national security, or as simple and more personal as a recent study on protein shakes and exercising.
We are all inherently journalists and reporters of news and information. The study of journalism, the profession, the responsibility, is a refined ability to “infect truth” to the general public. A journalist can measure his/her success, I believe, by the change brought about that is directly proportional to their work. Journalists write stories in order to bring about change.
